An exciting opportunity exists to be part of the fast growing aerospace sector in Australia’s Northern Territory. Amphibian Aerospace Industries (AAI) has announced Darwin as the home for the manufacture of the Albatross G-111T. There are opportunities now to be a part of AAI’s supply chain.
The Airport Development Group (ADG) has a portfolio of strategic land parcels available located in a dedicated Aerospace Manufacturing Precinct adjacent to Darwin International Airport. Alternatively, Investment Territory can assist companies to find other suitable sites if needed.
Why the Territory
The recent announcement of AAI as the anchor tenant of a new dedicated Aerospace Manufacturing Precinct is a game changer. AAI will be the first and only manufacturer of a US Federal Aviation Administration-certified commercial category amphibian aircraft in Australia. AAI will focus on five target segments for the G-111T: search and rescue, medivac, VIP transport, regular passenger transport (RPT) and cargo.
In securing this tenancy, the Territory Government has also facilitated a collaboration agreement aimed at fostering an ecosystem around AAI. Signatories to date include a range of innovative businesses: Spee3D, Nupress, Heat Treatment Australia, Dassault Systemes, ADG and AAI. In addition, the Territory Aviation Skills Centre, the Chamber of Commerce Northern Territory (NT), Industry Capability Network NT, Australia's Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation, Paspalis Innovation Investment Fund, the Advanced Manufacturing Growth Centre NT and the Territory Government will be signatories to the agreement.
Complementing the precinct are Darwin’s strong defence sector, growing space industry and the high-speed digital infrastructure connections that will link the Territory to other Australian capitals and directly to Asia and North America.
The Territory’s commitment to further develop the aerospace industry in the Territory is supported by a range of other government and industry initiatives including the Territory Government’s Local Jobs Fund, the Northern Australia Infrastructure Facility, the Advanced Manufacturing Ecosystem Fund and the Paspalis Innovation Investment Fund
A proven location
Aviation is already a crucial industry in the Territory in connecting people and industry - aircraft movements per resident are the highest of any of Australian jurisdictions. The industry is also a key enabler to other sectors in the Territory including energy, agribusiness, mining, tourism and international education and training.
Current aviation activities in the Territory include cargo / freight, surveying, photography, medical and emergency services, search and rescue, livestock mustering, pilot training, scientific testing and aircraft storage. These are in addition to RPT services, Australian Border Force and Australian and foreign defence force activities (eg, hosting air training exercises such as the biennial Pitch Black).
RAAF Base Darwin and RAAF Base Tindal (Katherine) are joint Australian Defence Force (ADF) and civilian user aerodromes and Robertson Barracks, located on the outskirts of Darwin, is a large Army base operating Tiger attack helicopters. A number of international defence prime contractors support the ADF’s rotary and fixed wing platforms stationed in the Territory.
The Territory and the Darwin Aerospace Manufacturing Precinct is the ideal place for advance manufacturing and aviation / aerospace businesses to expand their operations to meet the dynamic demands of these global industries.
