The opportunity

The Territory is prospective for a broad range of economically significant mineral commodities and has the potential to become a stable supplier of ‘critical minerals’ to the world.

The Territory’s commodity strengths lie in:

  • non-ferrous metals (zinc, lead, tungsten)
  • battery and high-technology minerals (lithium, rare earths and vanadium)
  • fertiliser commodities (phosphate and potash)
  • gold
  • uranium.

There are numerous opportunities to invest in the Territory minerals projects, from greenfield exploration targets to projects that are ready to enter production.

Why the Territory

The Territory is an established mining jurisdiction with world-class deposits of manganese on Groote Eylandt, bauxite at Gove, lead-zinc-silver at the McArthur River Mine, and gold at Callie in the Tanami.

The Territory has six major operating mines and a range of smaller operations and 17 new projects proceeding through feasibility studies and approvals.

While exploration is active in greenfield and brownfields areas, the Territory is relatively underexplored and sparsely populated, providing rich opportunities for new discoveries.

The Territory is strategically located to supply commodities to the high-growth Asia-Pacific region. Enabling infrastructure already in place includes a network of natural gas pipelines, a central railway corridor connecting the length of the Territory to the Port of Darwin, multi-user storage and handling facilities at the Port of Darwin, and sealed major roads.

To stimulate exploration and investment, the Northern Territory Government provides large volumes of pre-competitive geoscientific data free of charge to industry and investors.

The government’s four year (2018 to 2022) AUD26 million ‘Resourcing the Territory’ initiative also provides co-funding grants for exploration and assists companies and investors identify opportunities in the Territory.
