Project

The Gunyangara (Gove Port) Tourism Precinct Development will deliver improved marine tourism infrastructure at Inverell Bay at Nhulunbuy to enable growth in the tourism industry in the East Arnhem region.

The project is a significant upgrade of existing facilities to support existing tourism operators in the region and to encourage more tourism operators to visit and operate in East Arnhem.

The Australian Government through funding to Gumatj via the Aboriginals Benefit Account ($4.5 million), the Northern Territory Government ($1.5 million) via funding to Developing East Arnhem Limited (DEAL), and a further contribution from DEAL ($2 million) are co-funding the project to provide a range of major improvements to the precinct.

The works will include:

  • a new breakwater with vehicle and pedestrian access
  • a new floating jetting to provide access for larger commercial and recreational vessels
  • new land infrastructure, including upgrades to parking, a new ablution block and shade structures, enhancing the overall visitor experience.

Tenders for construction were split into 3 packages to encourage Indigenous and local business participation. Work started on site in 2023.

The upgrades, anticipated to be complete in 2024, will support existing tourism and marine operators, including local Yolŋu tourism operators, while providing further incentives for additional businesses to grow in East Arnhem.

Gove Boat Club will operate the new facilities, with support and collaboration with the Ngarrariyal Aboriginal Corporation and Gumatj Corporation.
