The Northern Territory Government is working with industry and the Australian Government to transform Middle Arm in Darwin into a sustainable ‘development ready’ industrial precinct.
The Middle Arm Sustainable Development Precinct is designed to accelerate the development of industries focussed on:
- renewable energy for the Northern Territory, Australia, and international markets
- critical minerals required for industries to successfully transition to net-zero emissions
- low-to-zero emissions fuels needed for Australian supply chain security, domestic and commercial cooking and heating, low emissions electricity generation and transport.
The Middle Arm Sustainable Development Precinct will be largely powered by renewables, master planned to achieve a circular economy approach of sustainable and responsible production and will use technology to achieve low-to-zero emissions.
The proposed precinct area covers ~1,500 hectares. The newly developed land would have dedicated areas for specific industries and common user infrastructure such as:
- new roads
- power and water supply
- telecommunications
- infrastructure corridors
- modular offloading facility
- a shipping channel.
The Australian Government has committed AU $1.5 billion planned equity to marine infrastructure, including modular offloading facility, common user wharf and widening of shipping channels, to fast track the precinct.
The project is currently in the early stages of master planning, concept design, and strategic environmental assessment to achieve better long-term project outcomes.
