NextDC launches brand new Darwin data centre

The opening of NextDC’s brand new D1 data centre in Darwin’s CBD has marked a new era in digital transformation for the Northern Territory.

The $80 million centre, which will house about 1,000 racks and support up to 7MW of IT load, will enable organisations operating in the Territory to embrace digital innovation and compete in new and dynamic growth markets across the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region.

A Territory workforce of up to 200 people supported builder Kapitol Group to construct the new data centre which is the first of several new data centres planned for Darwin.

The facility will offer critical digital infrastructure to support all levels of business and government, as well as provide collaborative spaces to enable Territory technology innovators, start-ups, and growth companies.

D1 Darwin will use domestic and sub-sea cables into Darwin to securely connect and support data storage for customers in Australia and overseas. Vocus’s Darwin-Jakarta-Singapore sub-sea cable project, launched earlier this year, will provide national and international connectivity.

Data centres are crucial for the Territory’s digital connectivity and economic development, serving as the backbone and vital infrastructure for critical data storage, processing, and distribution.

They are critical to supporting cloud computing, data analytics and other digital services necessary for businesses across sectors such as agriculture, education, mining, tourism, defence, health care and retail services.

NextDC CEO Craig Scroggie said D1 Darwin will play a pivotal role in accelerated computing and represents the next step towards achieving national digital equity for the Northern Territory.

“This facility will enable organisations operating in the Northern Territory to embrace digital innovation and compete in new and dynamic growth markets across the APAC region.”

A NT Government spokesperson said NextDC’s D1 data centre will “significantly boost” the NT’s digital profile, marking a milestone for the Territory’s accelerating digital economy.

“It will provide numerous local and global organisations with mission critical infrastructure combined with access to global cloud platforms to drive and implement their digital growth strategies.

“Northern Territory businesses will be able to significantly boost the capability of their current digital footprint, actively supporting our digital territory action plan to enable all Territorians to reach their potential and thrive in a digital economy.”
