The Northern Territory Government is addressing key worker and private sector accommodation shortages in Alice Springs and Katherine.
Three local companies have been awarded agreements through the Northern Territory’s Regional Accommodation project.
- Melanka Pty Ltd to deliver 174 multi-level dwellings on Todd Street, in Alice Springs;
- Blueprint NT to deliver 6 dwellings in Kilgariff, Alice Springs; and
- Rundle Developments Pty Ltd to deliver 13 dwellings on Rundle Street, Katherine.
The agreements will see more than 190 dwellings built across Alice Springs and Katherine, with the dwellings in Alice Springs delivered over the next four years, and the Katherine dwellings completed by 2025.
Developers are responsible for undertaking the design, approvals and construction phases of the project at their own cost. Once constructed, the Government, will commit to a 10 year head-lease on half of the dwellings for key government workers, with the other half to be sold or leased to the private market.
The residential dwellings will be designed, delivered and maintained by the private sector. People interested in securing a dwelling for the private market, can contact the successful developers directly.
Work will continue to attract more developers to build another 227 homes in Katherine. The Government is also working to service and create an additional six superlot subdivision parcels which will create the potential future provision of 380 residential lots in Katherine East. The Northern Territory’s newly formed Housing Alliance will continue to investigate opportunities for housing in Katherine, and provide advice to government on accommodation solutions for the region.
In addition, the Northern Territory Government has also commenced discussions with Traditional Owners in Nhulunbuy to construct new residential dwellings for the town.
